PASHUPATINATH TEMPLE - JANAI PURNIMA FESTIVAL

George crouching on a temple wall watching the great masses come and go in the early morning at the Janai Purima festival. We walked in with Nabin and he told us of all the history and ceremony of what we would witness that day.

After a purifying ritual priests wrapped a red string around your neck or wrist I the belief that it would protect your soul from evil.

The crowds of Hindu worshippers and families swarmed the temple taking ritual baths wandering the vast grounds.

Holy men and guys just looking out for a hand out were sprinkled throughout the colorful crowds.

Various views of the huge compound that was reached by hundred of stairs and walkways. Monkeys sauntered all over and frequently sat and screamed at us folks for a tid-bit of food.

Down at the main temple this family delivered blessings and attached the red strings to the wrists and the red rice marking to the forehead afterwards. This is where I got mine.

More of the grounds. I walked up this river for a few hundred yards until I hit a wall and a dead dog came floating around the bend.

More wonderful families with folks young and old celebrating. I was taking so many photographs I really didn't have a chance to draw or paint much

More Hindu priests taking part in the rituals with hands stained red from hours of dyeing thread that is tied to the faithful's wrists in blessing

Hindu priest born and raised in California and moved to Nepal years ago to study and practice Hinduism.
